When Your Heat Exchanger Needs Gasket Replacement
Sealing failure gives warning before it becomes an incident. Acting early on these signs is the difference between a planned job and an emergency callout.
- External leakage or weeping along the edge of the plate pack, usually worst furthest from the fixed cover.
- Cross contamination between circuits, showing as conductivity, pH or hydrocarbon traces in the wrong stream.
- The frame has already been tightened to stop a leak and is at or near its minimum tightening dimension.
- Gaskets that are hardened, flattened, glazed, cracked or swollen when the unit is opened for inspection.
- A temperature or chemical excursion beyond what the compound was selected for.
- The unit has been opened for cleaning, which disturbs bonded gaskets and shortens their remaining life.
The tightening dimension is the clearest signal. Every plate pack has a nameplate dimension and a minimum dimension, and the gap between them is the compression reserve the gaskets have left. Once that reserve is gone, further tightening only deforms plates and crushes the groove. At that point heat exchanger gasket replacement is the only correct repair.
